Generation Next: Investing in Students, Strengthening Communities

At Community Action, we talk often about the importance of meeting people where they are and helping them build pathways forward. Sometimes that looks like housing support. Sometimes it looks like food access, workforce development, or utility assistance. And sometimes, it looks like walking alongside a high school student as they begin to imagine a future that once felt out of reach.

That is exactly what Generation Next, a program of Community Action Lehigh Valley, is doing.

Serving students in the Allentown, Bethlehem, and Easton Area School Districts, Generation Next is a college readiness, access, and completion program created to address disparities in education for high school students of color. The program helps students prepare not only for college admission, but for the transition into college life, completion of a post-secondary or trade program, and the steps that come after graduation.

This work is about helping students see what is possible.

Through classroom-based programming, Generation Next students build the practical and personal skills needed to navigate both high school and the next chapter beyond it. They visit college campuses, meeting professionals in career fields they are interested in. They gain access to scholarships and other resources. They begin shaping career profiles that can help guide them toward long-term success.

Just as important, they begin to understand themselves more clearly — their goals, their strengths, and the future they want to build.

Recently, Andrew Block, CAAP’s Director of Public Policy, had the opportunity to serve as a community expert mentor during the program’s first-ever Job Shadow Interview event at William Allen High School in Allentown.

The event brought together 24 sophomores and juniors for a day focused on communication, confidence, and career exploration. Students interviewed 10 volunteer community expert mentors, each of whom shared their own educational backgrounds, professional experiences, and career journeys.

It was a practical, hands-on opportunity for students to practice skills that will serve them well for years to come. It also gave them the chance to hear directly from adults who have navigated many different paths to success.

One of the most meaningful moments of the day came from the presence of three William Allen alumni who returned as volunteer mentors.

That kind of full-circle moment is powerful for the students to see.

Students who once walked the same halls came back as leaders, professionals, and role models, it sends a message that goes beyond words. It says: You belong in these spaces, too. Your future is worth investing in. And your story is still being written.

Programs like Generation Next reflect what Community Action does at its best. They recognize that opportunity is not evenly distributed, and there can be significant disparities. They respond by creating access, building confidence, and surrounding young people with the support they need to move forward.

They also remind us that anti-poverty work is not only about responding to immediate need. It is also about investing upstream in education, exposure, mentorship, and long-term possibility.

When we help a student prepare for college, connect with a mentor, or imagine themselves in a profession they had never considered before, we are doing more than supporting one individual. We are strengthening families, communities, and the future workforce at the same time.

That is Community Action.

We’re grateful to Community Action Lehigh Valley for continuing to create meaningful opportunities for students across the Lehigh Valley, and to the mentors, school partners, and alumni who made this event such a success.

When we invest in the next generation, we are investing in all of us.
