Motivated to make a change

Scranton-Lackawanna Human Development Agency, Inc.

Tara Perez

The Scranton-Lackawanna Human Development Agency was Tara Perez's last option. She had hit rock bottom and desperately needed to change her situation. She was homeless, unemployed and barely able to support herself and two children on the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) subsidy.

Tara had gone to multiple agencies looking for help, and felt as though she had tried every option available. Then Tara learned of the Scranton-Lackawanna Human Development Agency's Supported Work and Single Point of Contact (SPOC) programs. She enrolled in the Supported Work Program and slowly transitioned into the SPOC Program, enabling her to finish school and continue her job search. Tara says these programs saved her. With their help, she was able to apply for housing and further her education.

With the assistance of the Scranton-Lackawanna Human Development Agency, Tara enrolled in the administrative technician assistant program at Lackawanna College, studied hard for seven months and completed the program in January 2006. She returned to the agency's SPOC Program to secure employment and soon began sending out resumes and going on interviews. After receiving only rejection letters, Tara felt as if she was going nowhere. With no experience, she felt as though no one wanted to give her an opportunity to prove herself.

Then Tara went for an interview at Northeast Credit and Collections, was offered a position as a legal assistant and her life began to change for the better. After only one month she was promoted to executive administrative assistant and received a significant raise.

After realizing she could depend on others, Tara found the support she needed through the Scranton-Lackawanna Human Development Agency's Supported Work and SPOC programs. Tara was on her way to becoming self-sufficient and providing a better life for her children. Without the agency's support Tara feels she would not have returned to school and achieved the goals she had established to support her family.

Scranton-Lackawanna Human Development Agency is the Community Action Agency that provides services to low-income individuals throughout Lackawanna County.
