Making Dreams Come True

Fayette County Community
Action Agency, Inc.

Misty Humphrey

Misty Humphrey came to Fayette County Community Action Agency (FCCAA) in 2003 hoping to make life better for herself and her daughter, Brianna. Her income was subsidized and, as a single mother without a high school diploma, employment prospects were bleak. Even so, Misty dreamed of moving into affordable housing and securing employment. That dream would become a reality thanks to FCCAA.

Misty and her FCCAA case manager began identifying her goals. Obtaining her General Equivalency Diploma (GED) to help her secure employment and relocating to a place of her own were goals Misty was anxious to achieve. Through the assistance of FCCAA, Misty enrolled in the Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women Infants and Children (WIC) and the agency's Food Bank. With help from the housing department, Misty was able to obtain an apartment and enter the agency's Adult Education Program.

In late 2004, Misty completed her GED and then enrolled in FCCAA's Community Training Institute (CTI) where she completed the administrative office professional certification program. She then went on to complete an externship for her degree at CareerLink. Misty performed so well that CareerLink hired her right after graduation. She worked for CareerLink until she was laid off because of funding problems. Once again FCCAA stepped in. With the help of its job development team, Misty obtained a job with the Association of Retarded Citizens (ARC). She is currently employed by the association and provides individualized tutoring for adult consumers. In addition to her work with ARC, Misty works at Brianna's day care to help offset the costs of child care.

Misty's accomplishments are mainly attributed to her non-wavering focus and determination, with Brianna always being her first priority. Misty's life has gone full circle. Not long ago, she was the person in need of services; today she is using the skills she obtained with the assistance of Fayette County Community Action Agency to help others. FCCAA staff is proud to point out that Misty has a strong sense of self-motivation and perseverance.

According to Misty, FCCAA changed her life by helping her believe in herself. A hard-working, determined, single mother, Misty is now using the training she obtained at FCCAA to build a secure life for herself and Brianna. With her work ethic and commitment, she may very well return to the agency to help others achieve their dreams.

Fayette County Community Action Agency has been helping low-income citizens of Fayette County overcome barriers to self-sufficiency for over 40 years.
