The journey toward self sufficiency

Central PA Community Action, Inc.

Lori Ann Lowe

Lori Ann Lowe was 15 when she became pregnant with her first child. Having no where to live, she moved in and out of the homes of friends. This instability, along with her young age and lack of parental support, prompted Children and Youth Services (CYS) to monitor her situation. Two more children entered her life putting further burdens on Lori's already difficult situation. Then things steadily got worse as a series of tramatic events found Lori in a downward spiral. She was all alone, CYS had taken her children and their father had been incarcerated. Lori was devastated and had no idea what to do. "I felt like I lost my life," said Lori.

Even with all of the problems facing her, Lori's self determination began to show through. With some help from her family, Lori spent the next two years of her life focused on regaining custody of her children. She got a job, a car and a home and was finally able to regain custody of her children. Lori was making progress in regaining control of her life.

In September 2005, Lori was referred to the Supported Engagement (SE) program of Central PA Community Action, Inc. (CPCA) after the birth of her fourth child. She soon developed the skills she needed to get and stay employed as well as helpful daily living skills including decision making, coping and money management.

"Lori was nervous and unsure of herself," said Tammy Litten, SE case manager. "However, she was open to making positive changes in her life." Lori focused on the goals she had set and with the help of her case manager and became committed to reaching those goals. "Every time I experienced a barrier, no matter how big or small, my case manager helped me to overcome it," said Lori. "We became a team."

Lori was encouraged by her case manager to never give up. The extensive counseling and support she received helped to increase her self-esteem and motivate her to keep going forward. "My life is finally on an upward track from that downward spiral I was on as a 15-year-old little girl and I will make it to the top," Lori says.

Lori received her General Equivalency Diploma in January 2006. Through the SE program, she obtained paid work experience at CPCA, assisting with the family savings account and Earned Income Tax Credit programs as well as in the food pantry. Lori is currently on a waiting list for training as a licensed practical nurse and has her eye on a Volunteers in Service to America position with Americorps.

"Lori has been faced with many challenges in her life." said Tammy. "It has been gratifying to see her recognize her own potential and strive to meet her goals. She is self-directed and a pleasure to work with. Lori now believes in herself, this alone has made her a success."

Lori's main goal in life is to be the sole support of her children. With the career she has chosen, she will certainly have the opportunity to achieve her goal.
