B8: Social enterprise: How to make money and protect your charitable status (RD)

Learn Critical Legal and Tax Planning Considerations to Protect Your Venture and Your 501(c)(3) Status. In these tough economic times, increasing numbers of charities are starting social ventures to generate revenue to support their missions. Social entrepreneurship is an excellent way to diversify revenue sources and decrease reliance on contributions, but there are serious potential risks.  A social enterprise that is unrelated to your organization’s charitable purpose will generate unrelated business taxable income and could jeopardize its tax-exempt status.

Come hear about the experiences of providing a centralized worksite and the benefits to the participants, program and community.  Hear how clients are being placed in jobs, and keeping the jobs.


B10: Don’t reinvent the wheel: Let’s share (AD)

A good scaling tool is critical to every Community Action Agency in their quest to assist individuals taking those small or large steps toward their self sufficiency goal.  Unfortunately, time and knowledge can be our greatest enemy in the development of these tools. If your agency has invested time in the development of a scale we ask that you bring that tool with you and share it with others. Also, if you are looking for some assistance in the development or completion of your tools, please join this round table discussion as we all share our experiences in the what, why and how each of these tools were created, are currently being used, and the manner in they enhance our various case management systems provide feedback to individuals, case managers and the agencies as a whole.

C12: Enhancing economic development through material reuse (LD)
Ted Reiff, The Reuse People of America, Inc.

In this session, participants will learn how to improve the standard of living in local communities through a unique process that reuses salvage building materials in economic development programs. Participants will explore an integrated business model of deconstruction, building materials salvage and distribution that improves neighborhoods, generates jobs and creates a better environment for everyone.

C13: The new reality: Community development with diminishing resources (RD)

The session will provide new ideas for financing community development projects in light of reduced public funding.  Tax credit programs under-utilized public financing programs, as well as taking full advantage of your organizations 501(c)(3) status are discussed in detail.


C14: Framework for empowering economic success (WD)
Holly Chase, Pennsylvania Housing Finance Agency

Participants will learn about the six financial concepts that everyone should know in order to achieve economic success.  Adapted from the Financial Literacy and Educations Commission’s core competencies, both knowledge and behaviors will be discussed along with corresponding lessons in widely available financial education curricula.

This course will improve your understanding of how to create an effective organization and introduce you to an additional approach that is in sync with ROMA philosophy.

Nonprofits are increasingly using cause marketing arrangements like corporate sponsorships and commercial co-ventures to generate revenues.  This joint presentation by a seasoned fundraiser and experienced lawyer will teach you how to identify prospects and document these important relationships in a way that maximizes revenues and protects your organization.

D19: Bridges Out Of Poverty: Part 1 (WD)

Bridges Out of Povertyis an approach that helps employers, community organizations, social-service agencies, and individuals address poverty in a comprehensive way. The Bridges Model offers ideas, structures, and concrete tools a community needs to prevent, alleviate, and reduce poverty. What keeps individuals in poverty?  The “Hidden Rules” covered in this program will increase participant understanding of the dynamics that prevent the move to self sufficiency.
This is a two part workshop. Part 2 is offered on Friday morning from 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.
